My public bus ride conversations have usually involved a guy sporting a glass eye with a life story better suited for one of those bad talk shows. But a trip to Cuatro Cienegas, Mexico made the public transportation experience worthwhile. (Who knew a bus station would house a Catholic shrine?)
We jostled and bounced and were a captive audience for a few vendors selling their wares, including leather belts and plastic religious ornaments. Finally, the brakes squealed, the dust whirled and we has arrived. (Think “Romancing the Stone” minus the chickens.)
In the middle of the Chihuahuan desert, we found four spring-fed pools. (Cuatro Cienegas means “four marshes.”) We saw various forms of life, including long-stemmed lilies, pupfish, and turtles. There are 60 species of living organisms in these lakes, (lagunas) ranging from snails to reptiles. I even heard rumors that aliens have landed there, but you know how that goes.
Local street vendors offered a plethora of tacos, including barbacoa, egg, steak, chicken, habanera chilies, beans and more. Flavor ratings were taken most seriously, because the secret to life might just be somewhere between those mysterious ingredients. And you know how us Americans are always on a that search for ‘the meaning of life’ and all. Maybe it’s hiding there. All it takes is a bus ticket, a brave soul and a panache for tacos.
