Traveling with kids can be tricky business, despite convenient locales, customized cuisines and trained staff. Young children live only in the now, not grasping the concept of yesterday or the next five minutes. They teeter between happiness and hysteria at any given moment. Altering their schedules can wreak havoc on all parties involved. But to those brave enough to travel with kids, the rewards can be amazing.

There's a Shark in the Laguna

In Florida

Sharks abound in the Atlantic Ocean. But surfers and local residents have learned to adapt to the ill-reputed fish. During a stroll along the Indialantic Beach, FL, a local let us ‘pet’ their catch.

Interesting. But I’m still not sold.

Checking off your life list is always a thrill, especially when your #5 goal is to take surfing lessons. We took a lesson from longtime surfer, Jonathan Mayberry, at Ron Jons Surf School by reknown surfer and teacher, Craig Carroll in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

I learned about the goofy foot (when your right foot is placed on the front of the board), that the board should be two-feet taller than your body and that choosing a soft board is a smart way for a beginner to avoid getting knocked unconscious.

Next we learned how to paddle, grip the rails (side of board), keep toes toward the end of the board in a curled-up position, paddle, pop up into a side position, then find balance and cruise. Technical jargon aside, I managed to stand up most of the time, which made the experience, as they say, ‘tubular.’ (Sorry, it was unavoidable.)

I highly recommend investing in a lesson before hitting the waves. That way you know how to approach the water with less frustration. Now how to avoid humming the “Jaws” theme song? That’s another story.
